Mongolia: Coal Exports Crossed CY16 Total

Mongolia has surpassed previous year’s coal export total by Oct’17 itself, with the exports of 2.61 MnT coal during the month.

According to the customs data, the country’s total coal exports have surged to 28.15 MnT during Jan’17-Oct’17, which is 9% (or 2.44 MnT) higher than the total exports of 25.71 MnT recorded during CY16(Jan’16-Dec’16).

Monthly Coal export had increased 14% M-o-M in Oct’17 compared with 2.28 MnT in Sep’17. On the yearly basis, exports was up 5% Y-o-Y compared with 2.48 MnT in Oct’16.

The enormous growth in Mongolian coal exports has resulted from the ban imposed by Chinese government on North Korean coal. Following which, Chinese buyers had increased their coal sourcing from Mongolia.

So far, China had imported 27.7 MnT coal from Mongolia during Jan’17-Oct’17, 51% higher than imports of 18.35 MnT coal during the same period in CY16. The country has also overtook the import total of 25.32 MnT recorded in CY16.

Major Coal Importers in Oct’17:
China has imported nearly 98% of the total Mongolian coal in CY17. Monthly import was 2.58 MnT in Oct’17, up 14% M-o-M compared with 2.26 MnT in Sep’17 which was also 7% higher on the year compared with 2.42 MnT in Oct’16.

Singapore has received coal shipment of 0.02 MnT from Mongolia during the month. While the remaining coal quantity during the month was imported by the UK, whose import in CY17 has jumped 87% Y-o-Y during Jan’17-Oct’17.
