Meghalaya Government Trying Resuming Coal Mining in the State

The Meghalaya government today has approved a proposal to approach the central government to seek permission for resuming coal mining in the state.

On 17Apr’14, the National Green Tribunal had banned coal mining in the state on environmental concerns. The ban has been taking a toll on the state’s finances since then. Moreover, several small scale units, dependent on coal produced in the state, have closed down under the impact of the ban.

The state ministry has decided to adhere to all environmental norms mandated by the National Green Tribunal in mining coal, if allowed to resume in the state.

It is worth mentioning that Meghalaya is an important corridor for transporting coal to Bangladesh.
