The long anticipation of seeing imposition of Anti Dumping Duty on Met Coke imports into India from China by Indian producers is likely to be fulfilled in not so a distant future as learnt from high placed sources.
Battered by dumping of the product into India by suppliers in China and Australia, the Indian Metallurgical Coke Manufacturers Association (IMCMA) had filed a petition to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Dec’15 to protect the domestic industry from severe deterioration by imposing Anti Dumping Duty on imports of the product. In the petition, the association had initially requested for imposition of 20% duty on the imports.
Subsequent to the submission of the petition, the ministry had conducted an investigation to establish the veracity on the claim; however, no action was implemented thereafter.
But, recently some actions have started in the ministry towards imposition of the duty, CoalMint has learnt from reliable sources.
According to a highly placed source, high quality Met Coke with constituent ash less than 12.5% will be kept out of the duty framework; also, the rate of the duty is likely to be in between 10-12% ,which, however, is not going to conform to the demand of the association.
However, an exact timeline for the ministry to announce imposition of the duty could not be ascertained.
