JSW Steel’s Iron Ore Sourcing in Jan’16

JSW Steel, India’s leading steelmaker, procures iron ore from Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Goa and via imports. The steelmaker procured 1.4 MnT iron ore through Karnataka e-auctions and imports in Jan’16.

In Jan’16, majority of iron ore had been sourced from Karnataka e-auctions. The steelmaker procured 1.05 MnT iron ore in Jan’16 against 1.69 MnT in Dec’15. The steelmaker procured 740,000 MT iron ore fines and 280,000 MT iron ore lumps in Jan’16.

Steelmaker procured not even a single rakes from NMDC Chhattisgarh mines since 2 months (Dec’15 & Jan’16). However, lastly the steelmaker moved only 13 rakes i.e. 50,050 MT iron ore in Nov’15. Also, for Jan’16 deliveries, NMDC rolled over prices and offered fines (Fe 64%) at INR 1,560/MT.

In Jan’16, JSW Steel imported around 373,800 MT iron ore via three shipments. First shipment consisted of 145,000 MT iron ore concentrate, following next shipment from Brazil carrying 170,000 MT Fe 65% iron ore fines from Carajas complex, Brazil. Also, the third shipment carried 59,400 MT South African lumps arrived at Jaigarh Port. Owing to declining global iron ore prices, the steelmaker shifted their buying interest to imported from domestic ore.

Iron ore purchases from Goa e-auctions remained nill in Jan’16 as no auction had been conducted in Jan’16. However, in Dec’15, the steelmaker procured 50,000 MT iron ore from Goa e-auctions.
