JSW Infra Aims at 200 MnT Cargo in Two Years

JSW Infrastructure Ltd is a part of JSW Group company, now plans to ramp up its cargo throughput capacity to 200 million tonne in a span of two years. Presently, JSW Infra has the capacity to handle 75 MnT in a year at all its facilities.

To reach a cargo handling capacity of 200 million tonnes, the company would need to spend INR 8,800 crore. “At Paradip, we are going to create cargo facilities for coal and iron ore with a tonnage of 50 MnT. On this facility, we have firmed up investments of INR 2000 crore. The Paradip cargo facility is expected to be operational by March 2019”, JSW Infrastructure Joint MD and CEO BVJK Sharma said at a logistics seminar in Bhubaneswar.

At Paradip, JSW Infrastructure will have a terminal to handle 32 MnT of coal and 18 MnT of iron ore each year. The uptake of coal will be from Coal India subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) and then the dry fuel will be shipped to thermal power plants in different regions across the country.

It may be noted that JSW Infrastructure had proposed to establish a captive port in Odisha at Jatadhari river mouth, close to the limits of the Paradip port. The port project was part of JSW Group’s integrated, shore-based steel unit of 12 MnT capacities. However, after the state government cold shouldered the port project, the company is now going ahead with a captive jetty. On this jetty along with attendant infrastructure, JSW Infrastructure will be investing about INR 2000 crore.

JSW Jaigarh Port currently handles dry and liquid bulk cargo but has plans to enter container handling. The company is eyeing at various opportunities at the proposed refinery by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd in the Konkan coast of Maharashtra as Jaigarh port will be equipped to handle crude oil for the refineries.
