Jindal Steel emerges as India’s largest heat treatment player with recent expansion

  • Company adds 60,000 t per month heat-treatment capability
  • Portfolio expanded to include high-strength, defence grades and alloy steels

Jindal Steel Ltd. has formally positioned itself as the country’s largest heat-treatment player, following a major capacity expansion that elevates its heat-treating capability to 60,000 t per month. This milestone not only enhances its domestic leadership but also strategically aligns the company with India’s broader industrial and self-reliance objectives.

The new facility integrates advanced DUBONG furnace technology capable of uniform processing across plate thicknesses from 6 mm to 200 mm and widths up to 5 metres. This precision-driven setup enables the production of high-end grades—traditionally imported—across furnace-normalised (FN) and quenched and tempered (Q and T) categories.

The expanded portfolio includes 2,000+ MPa ultra-high-strength plates, abrasion-resistant grades exceeding 600 BHN, ballistic-certified armour-grade steels and specialised tool, die, and alloy steels. These capabilities directly support critical sectors including defence manufacturing, heavy engineering, mining, and infrastructure.

According to the company’s senior leadership, high-quality domestic heat-treated plate production represents a structural shift for downstream industries, enabling Indian manufacturers to meet stringent global specifications and strengthen export competitiveness. The reduced dependence on imported high-end plates also contributes to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, with potential import substitution across defence, mining equipment, and mobility applications.
