Japan’s crude steel production in Nov’21 reached 8.04 million tonnes (mn t), an increase of 10.7% compared to the same month of the previous year, as per data from Japan Iron and Steel Federation.
Compared with last year, the world’s third-largest steel producer has recorded a growth in crude steel production for nine consecutive months. As demand for steel products remained strong both in Japan and overseas, converter and electric furnace steel producers ramped up production by double digits.
Growth in daily steel output
Daily steel production in Nov was recorded at 268,000 t, an increase of 3,000 t from Oct. Production of crude steel in Jan-Nov stood at 88.4 mn t, up 17% year-on-year, and is expected to touch 96 mn t in the calendar year (Jan-Dec).
In Nov, converter steel production rose by 10.3 %, y-o-y, to 5.83 mn t, while electric furnace steel output increased 11.7% on the year to 2.2 mn t, both registering gains for the ninth consecutive month.
The breakdown of ordinary steel and special steel was 6.22 mn t (up 8.4% y-o-y) and 18.19 mn t (up 19.4% y-o-y), respectively.
Hot-rolled steel production increased by 8.2% on the year to 7.07 mn t. Among ordinary steel materials, H-beams witnessed a growth of 17% in production, while output of thick plates and hot-rolled coils grew18%, and 7.9%, respectively, compared to the corresponding period of last year.
