Japan: Tokyo Steel Makes 5th Successive Scrap Purchase Price Hike

Japan’s leading EAF mini-mill – Tokyo Steel has raised yet again domestic scrap purchase price by JPY 500-1000/MT (USD 5-9) at all five of its works. Notably, this is the second price hike in the beginning of the week and the new prices for all grades shall be effective from tomorrow (4th June’20), as per the new price circular released.

With this impression, the company will now pay JPY 23,000 /MT (USD 211) for H2 scrap delivered at its Tahara plant in Central Japan. Meanwhile, the new prices for H2 scrap delivery to the Utsunomiya plant in the Kanto region and Okayama plant now stand at JPY 22,000/MT (USD 202) and JPY 20,500/MT (USD 188) respectively.

Scrap offers to Okayama plant has now moved up by JPY 2000/MT, after bottomed out at JPY 17,500/MT in later half of April’20, as per price maintained with SteelMint.

H2 scrap prices for Kyushu works and Takamatsu steel Centre have now risen to JPY 21,500/MT (USD 198) and 19,500/MT (USD 179) respectively.

On the other hand, Japanese H2 offers to South Korea increased further by JPY 500/MT to JPY 25,500/MT, FoB Japan, however, Korean buyers are bidding at around JPY 24,500/MT.
