Japan: Tokyo Steel Cuts Bid for Scrap Purchase

As per new price circular released, Japan’s leading EAF mini-mill – Tokyo Steel has lowered its scrap purchase price at all 5 of its works, by JPY 500/MT (USD 5). This comes as the 2nd price revision by the company in Oct’19, while the new prices for all grades shall be effective from today (9th Oct’19).

After the said price cut, the company will pay JPY 22,500/MT (USD 215 ) for H2 scrap delivered at its Tahara plant in Central Japan and Utsunomiya plant in Kanto region, while the new price for Okayama plant and Takamatsu steel centre stand at JPY 20,500/MT (USD 196 ) and JPY 19,500/MT (USD 187 ) respectively. The price for H2 delivery to Kyushu at JPY 23,000/MT (USD 219).

This is the 12th successive price cut by the company across its plants since Aug’19 after a solitary price hike at end July’19, while on an overall all basis the Japanese domestic scrap prices have been declining continuously since April’19 with no support from slow finished steel sales and falling prices.
