Japan: Scrap buying price falls, South korea’s trade slump

In the Kanto region, the purchase price of steel scrap by electric furnace manufacturers fell by 1,000 yen, and the purchase price of H2 fell below 55,000 yen a ton for the first time in half a month.

Tokyo Steel’s Utsunomiya Plant reduced the purchase price of all products by 1,000 yen from the 25th. Other manufacturers also moved to reduce the price by 500~1,000 yen. As of the 27th, the manufacturer’s actual purchase price (H2) is 53,500~4,000 yen per ton. The low willingness of Korean manufacturers to buy was a downward pressure on the domestic market.

Last week on the 24th, Korea’s Hyundai Steel presented the H2 bid price at FOB 52,300 yen (about 51,300 yen in FAS equivalent). The price was well below the Gulf price, which made it clear that South Korea lacked buying appetite. Totetsu Utsunomiya, which is in good stock, confirmed Korea’s procurement stance and lowered the purchase price from the 25th.

Inquiries from overseas such as South Korea and Vietnam have been slow, and the number of receiving cargo has increased at the Gulf Yard. As it is the end of the fiscal year, cargo movement in the market is steady, and supply and demand in the region are still greatly relaxed, as electric furnace manufacturers are expanding restrictions on receiving goods due to the favorable arrival situation.

As of the 27th, the Gulf Price (H2) has also fallen to around 51,500~2,000 yen per ton. The purchase price of manufacturers is still falling ahead of the manufacturer’s bid price, and there was a voice in the market that “there is still room for a decline in the electric furnace purchase price” (yard operator).
