Japan: Long Steel Exports Hit 5-Year Low in CY18

Amid stronger domestic demand and construction activities ahead 2020 Olympics, Japan’s domestic steel demand remains supported. This resulted in decline in export volumes.

Japan, one of the largest steel producers has registered down fall in long steel exports in CY’18 since the data retained by SteelMint. As per number available, volumes have hit 5-years low.

As per customs data, the nation has exported about 2.39 MnT Finish Long steel in CY 2018 down by 3.62% against 2.48 MnT in CY 2017. On contrary M-o-M, exports improved slightly by around 2.37% i.e. 204,462 MT in Dec’18 against 199,716 MT in Nov’18.

Under Finish Long commodities following HS Codes has been considered – Bar & Rod (HS Code 7213 & 7214), MS Wire (HS Code 7217) along with Angle & Shapes (HS Code 7215 & 7216).

On yearly basis in CY18, Bar’s & Rods have contributed the major exports and registered at 1.68 MnT (-7.18%) followed by Angle and Shapes 0.61 MnT (+5.17%) and remaining was Wire Rod 0.09 MnT (0%).

Country wise:

In the CY 2018, the largest importer of Finish Long Steel from Japan was South Korea – 0.78 MnT (-9%), Thailand – 0.35 MnT (0%) & China at 0.26 MnT (-21%).

Imports

Japan’s Finish Long Import hit 5 year high by 36.36% in CY 2018 to 0.6 MnT against 0.44 MnT in CY2017 since the data maintained by SteelMint and the major exporter registered as South Korea at 0.26 MnT (-10.34%) followed by China – 0.19 MnT (+72.72%) and Vietnam – 0.07 MnT.

-In line, monthly comparison imports elongated by 20% and stood at 0.06 MnT in Dec’18 against 0.05 MnT in Nov’18.

On yearly basis in CY18, Bar’s & Rods have contributed the major exports and registered at 0.28 MnT (+133.34%) followed by Wire Rod 0.18 MnT (-5.26%) and remaining was Angle and Shapes 0.14 MnT (+7.69%).

As per the SteelMint’s assessment, in CY 2018 the crude steel production of the Japan registered bottommost at 104.32 MnT since CY2011 and on Y-o-Y basis it’s slightly down by (-0.32%) against 104.66 MnT in CY 2017.
