The contribution to carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction by Kobe Steel’s technologies, products, and services will reach 67.42 million tonnes (mnt) in fiscal 2025. The company has set medium- to long-term reduction targets of 78 mnt over 2030 and over 100 mnt by 50 years. The progress rate against the 30-year target achieved in fiscal 2023 was 86%.
On 30 September, the company held an online ESG briefing. Officials explained that, alongside reductions in production processes such as steel, efforts related to greenhouse gas reduction are progressing smoothly.
The largest contribution to reductions in technology and products in fiscal 2025 was from the reduction iron plant. Through plant supply by its US subsidiary Midrex, the company contributed to a reduction of 48.51 mnt of CO2. The steel and aluminum divisions contributed 14.5 mnt to the automotive sector. These two sectors accounted for more than 90% of the total.
The company also announced that it had become the first steel manufacturer to participate in the international consortium ‘Blue Visby Consortium’, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during ship navigation using digital technology.
The consortium is working on developing and promoting platforms to optimise vessel arrival times. A system that utilises data such as weather information and port congestion to present efficient operations. Kobe Steel, which imports iron ore and coal from overseas, participated in initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency of maritime transport.
