Japan contributes 10-12% of the seaborne market. The trade statistics released by Japan Ministry of Finance indicates that the country has imported around 64.2 MnT of iron ore during H1 2016,
In Jun’16, the country imported 11.28 MnT iron ore, up by 9.5% as compared to May’16. However, on a Y-o-Y basis, imports are increased by 7.7% when compared with the imports during the same month a year ago.
In 2015, the country imported 131 MnT iron ore from different countries. Japan mainly imports majority of iron ore from Australia, followed by Brazil.
Imports from Australia was registered at 37.8 MnT during H1 2016. In Jun’16, Japan imported around 6.73 MnT iron ore from Australia, accounting around 60% of the total imports during the month.
The other key exporters to Japan during H1 2016 were Brazil (18.3 MnT), South Africa (2.1 MnT), India (1.11 MnT), Chile (0.90 MnT), Canada (2.4 MnT) and others countries around 1.49 MnT.
