Japan: Iron Ore Imports at 130 MnT in 2016

Japan, the second-largest iron ore importer, after China, has imported 130 MnT iron ore in 2016, according to the trade data released by Japan Customs. Iron ore imports remained stable Y-o-Y.

In Dec’16, Japan iron ore imports have witnessed a growth of 5% M-o-M as it was 10.28 MnT in Dec’16. On similar lines, imports have also moved down by 6% Y-o-Y as it was 11.49 MnT in Dec’15.

The non-agglomerated iron ore (lumps and fines) import in 2016 was registered at 115.24 MnT against 118.4 MnT in 2015. In Dec’16, imports were registered at 9.45 MnT, up by 3.7% M-o-M and down by 11.3% Y-o-Y.

The agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrate) import was registered at 14.80 MnT in 2016 against 12.47 MnT in 2015. In Dec’16, imports were registered at 1.35 MnT, up by 15.3% M-o-M and 62% Y-o-Y.japan iron ore imports in 2016

Country-wise Japan iron ore imports in 2016

  1. Australia, the largest exporter of iron ore to Japan exported 77.39 MnT iron ore in 2016 against 79.8 MnT in 2015. In Dec’16, the country exported 6.71 MnT iron ore, up by 20% M-o-M and down by 14.3% Y-o-Y.
  2. Brazil, the second largest iron ore exporter has exported 35.95 MnT iron ore in 2016 against 36.42 MnT in 2015. In Dec’16, the country exported 2.35 MnT, down by 27% M-o-M and 11% Y-o-Y to Japan.
  3. Canada, the third largest iron ore exporter to Japan has exported 5.49 MnT in 2016 against 3.91 MnT in 2015. In Dec’16, the country exported 0.68 MnT against 0.63 MnT in Nov’16. In Dec’15, the country exported 0.32 MnT iron ore.
