Japan: Iron Ore Import Up 5% in Sept’17

Japan, the second largest iron ore importer of the world imported 10.44 MnT iron ore in Sept’17 according to the trade data released by Japan customs. Japan iron ore imports have increased by 5% M-o-M in the month Sept’17 against 9.94 MnT in Aug’17.

However it’s import has been decreased by 15% Y-o-Y in Sept’17 compared to 12.33 MnT in Sept’16.

During Jan-Sept’17, Japan has imported 93.87 MnT iron ore down by 5% against same period last year which was 98.65 MnT.

In Sept’17, an agglomerated (pellets/concentrate) iron ore imports were up 11% M-o-M to 1.55 MnT, against 1.4 MnT in Aug’17. It was also up 4% Y-o-Y in Sept’17 against 1.49 MnT in Sept’16.

Similarly the non-agglomerated (fines/lump) iron ore imports were also up by 4% to 8.88 MnT in Sept’17 against 8.53 MnT in Aug’17. However, on yearly basis imports were down by 18% in Sept’17 against 10.84 MnT in Sept’16.

Country Wise Japan Iron Ore Import in Sept’17

Australia continues to remain the largest iron ore exporter to Japan in the month of Sept’17 to 5.05 MnT down by 17% on monthly basis followed by Brazil 3.76 MnT up 57%, Canada experienced sharp increase in exports and it exported 0.89 MnT with nearly seven fold increase compared to last month.
