As per latest customs data, Japan flat steel imports which includes 7208 (HR coils /Plates),7209 (CR coils),7225 (Electrical sheets),7210/7212(GP/GC) surged by 16% M-o-M basis to 0.37 MnT in Jul’18 as compared to 0.32 MnT in previous month.
Similarly on yearly basis the nation’s flat steel imports slumped by 8% in Jul’18 as compared to 0.40 MnT in Jul’17.
During first seven months of CY18 (Jan-Jul) nation’s flat steel imports stood at 2.43 MnT lower by 8% against 2.65 MnT in corresponding time frame of previous year.
South Korea,a key exporter to Japan is reducing the volumes of supply available for exports amid strong demand in domestic market.Meanwhile import volumes also reported decline from China amid firm demand and higher prices in domestic market.Thus this results to decline in import volumes of flat steel to Japan in Jan-Jul’18.

Country-Wise Japan Flat Steel imports in Jul’17- In Jul’17,Japan imported 0.23 MnT from South Korea in Jul’18 higher by 5% against 0.22 MnT in Jun’17.
Meanwhile second largest exporter was Taiwan at 0.10 MnT of flat steel up by 43% as compared to 0.07 Mnt in previous month.
Lastly,China exported 0.05 MnT to Japan in Jul’18,lower by 25% against 0.04 MnT in preceding month.
