Japan flat steel exports have fallen to 1.89 MnT in Oct’17. This is country’s lowest monthly export volume since Jan’12. Japan flat steel exports were recorded at 1.84 MnT in Jan’12.
According to latest customs data released, Japan flat steel exports which includes 7208 (HR coils /Plates), 7209 (CR coils), 7225 (Electrical sheets),7210/7212(GP/GC) has exported at 1.89 MnT in Oct’17 compared to 2.13 MnT in Sep’17.Thus nation’s flat steel exports declined 11% on monthly basis in Oct’17.
This is Japan’s lowest monthly export volumes since Jan’12 as it was 1.84 MnT then. However on yearly basis Japan flat steel exports fell significantly by 18% in Oct’17 against 2.31MnT in Oct’16.
Japanese steel makers have preferred offering material in domestic market than offering in overseas owing to better realization. Steel demand in Japan continues to remain strong amid bullish construction activities taking place for 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and rising production from auto makers. This has resulted in sharp hike in scrap purchase prices as well.
In the tenure of ten months (Jan-Oct) of 2017,Japan flat steel exports moved down by 10% to 21.08 MnT as compared to 23.49 MnT in similar time frame of previous year.

China was the largest importer of flat steel of Japan in Jan-Oct’17-China was the major flat steel importer of Japan in Oct’17.Japan exported 3.49 MnT to China in the time span of Jan-Oct’17 (accounted for 17% of share).Other major flat steel importing countries from Japan include Thailand which stood at 3.39 MnT (accounted for 16.04% of share),South Korea at 2.72 MnT (contributes 13% of share) followed by Mexico at 1.53 MnT and Vietnam at 0.14 MnT in Jan- Oct’17.
On monthly basis Japan has exported 0.33 MnT of flat steel to China which is down by 11% in Oct’17 from 0.37 MnT in Sep’17 .Other major markets for Japan flat steel export are Thailand at 0.29 MnT and South Korea at 0.20 MnT. India’s imports of flat steel from Japan increased 60% M-o-M to 0.08 MnT.
