Japan, the world’s 3rd largest steel producer has reported decline in its Finish long steel exports during the first nine months of CY18, as per recent released custom data.
As per custom, the nation has exported about 1,752,735 MT Finish long steel in Jan-Sep’18, decreased by 6.19% against 1,868,387 MT in Jan-Sep’17. Similarly on monthly comparison exports fall sharply by 18% and stood at 173,489 MT in Sep’18 as compared to 211,594 MT in Aug’18.
Under Finish Long steel commodities following HS codes has been considered – Bar & Rod (HS code 7213 & 7214), MS Wire (HS code 7217) along with Angle & Shapes (HS code 7215 & 7216).
South Korea, stood as the largest of importer of Japan’s long steel exports with a contribution of 565,480 MT (32.26%), while the second major was Thailand at 262,095 MT (14.95%), followed by China at 185,725 MT (10.6%) & 167,570 MT (9.56%) through the US, during the Jan-Sep’18 period.

— Japan’s Crude steel production registered at 8.42 MnT in Sep’18, down by 4.42% against 8.81 MnT in Aug’18.
— Japan’s finish long steel imports being fall by around 13% M-o-M and stood at 39,870 MT in Sep’18 which was about 46,161 MT in Aug’18. However, the imports during Jan-Sep’18 rises close to 31% and recorded at 433,816 MT as against 331,219 MT in Jan-Sep’17.
— Further the nation’s Billet exports slump by 13% M-o-M & 3% during Jan-Sep’18. As per custom, Japan’s billet exports during Sep’18 was at about 257,437 MT & during Jan-Sep’18 at around 2,810,394 MT. Taiwan remains the largest importer of Japanese Billet in Jan-Sep’18 with imports of 1,256,043 MT (44.69%), followed by South Korea 740,645 MT (26.35%) & Thailand at 382,094 MT (13.60%).
