In 2017, South Korea’s imports occupied almost half share of total ferrous scrap exports from Japan. In Dec’17, Japan’s ferrous scrap exports hit highest during 2017.
Japan – third largest exporter of ferrous scrap after EU-28 and US witnessed 6% Y-o-Y fall in its ferrous scrap exports in 2017. As per recent customs data, Japan exported 8.05 MnT ferrous scrap during 2017 as against 8.55 MnT ferrous scrap exports in 2016.
In Dec’17, Japan exported 0.75 MnT ferrous scrap hitting highest in CY17. On monthly basis, ferrous scrap exports in Dec’17 registered 12% M-o-M growth against 0.67 MnT ferrous scrap exports in Nov’17.
On yearly premises, ferrous scrap exports from Japan witnessed fall of 10% Y-o-Y in Dec’17 against 0.83 MnT ferrous scrap exports in Dec’16.
Japan exported 2.05 MnT ferrous scrap during Q4-CY17, up 5% against 1.96 MnT in Q4-CY16 while marginally down by 1% Q-o-Q against 2.08 MnT ferrous scrap exports in Q3-CY17.
Japan mainly exports special grade H2 scrap along with other preferred grades as SD, HS, Shindachi and H1.

South Korea remained preferred destination for Japan’s ferrous scrap exports –
South Korea continued to remain largest importer of Japanese ferrous scrap with 3.95 MnT occupying 49% share of total exports in CY17, followed by second largest importer China with 1.93 MnT imports from Japan. Other major importers for Japanese scrap were Vietnam (1.52 MnT), Taiwan (0.37 MnT) and Bangladesh (0.20 MnT) respectively.
In Dec’17, South Korea imported highest 0.38 MnT ferrous scrap occupying 50% share in Japan’s ferrous scrap exports. While China and Vietnam imported 0.20 MnT and 0.13 MnT ferrous scrap respectively.
South Korea registered 18% growth while Taiwan and Vietnam witnessed decline of 55% and 23% respectively in CY17 from Japan as against ferrous scrap imports in CY16.
South Korean demand for Japanese scrap remained strong in Dec’17. Major steel mills aggressively raised bids for Japanese scrap to JPY 35,000-36,500/MT, FoB Japan in Dec’17 as against JPY 34,000-35,000/MT levels in Nov’17. Also amid strong domestic demand and increased construction activities for Olympics, domestic consumption of scrap was on higher side in Japan.
