Japan – third largest exporter of ferrous scrap after EU-28 and US, witnessed fall in its ferrous scrap exports in Jan’18 against exports recorded in Dec’17. As per recent customs data, Japan exported 0.57 MnT ferrous scrap in Jan’18 which is declined by 24% M-o-M as against 0.75 MnT ferrous scrap exports in Dec’17.
On yearly premises, ferrous scrap exports from Japan witnessed fall of 10% Y-o-Y in Jan’18 against 0.63 MnT ferrous scrap exports in Jan’17.
In 2017, ferrous scrap exports from Japan descend first time after witnessing three consecutive growths since 2014. Japan exported 8.05 MnT ferrous scrap in 2017 as against 8.55 MnT scrap exports during 2016. South Korea occupied almost half share in Japan’s ferrous scrap exports in 2017.
Japan mainly exports special grade H2 scrap along with other preferred grades as SD, HS, Shindachi and H1. Major scrap export activities remain concentrated on ports like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Yokohama in Japan.
South Korea remained largest importer of Japanese ferrous scrap –
In Jan’18, South Korea imported highest 0.38 MnT ferrous scrap from Japan. Followed by other prominent importers like Vietnam (0.13 MnT, stable M-o-M), China (0.04 MnT, -80% M-o-M) and Taiwan (0.02 MnT, +100% M-o-M) respectively.
Japanese scrap export prices remained strong during Dec’17 and Jan’18 months. H2 scrap export prices increased to JPY 36,000/MT, FoB in Dec’17 from JPY 34,000/MT, FoB during Nov’17. Prices increased further till first half of Jan’18 and reached highest at JPY 37,500/MT on FoB basis. On the other hand, domestic demand for scrap remained strong amid increased construction activities in Japan. High scrap prices and increased domestic consumption could have resulted in fall in scrap exports from Japan in Jan’18.
