Japanese coal imports have rebounded after falling in Dec’18, to record 3% M-o-M growth in Jan’19. Imports recorded at 16.79 MnT in Jan’19, were however 2% lower on the year compared with 17.14 MnT in Jan’18.
A grade-wise break-up of imports indicate that non-coking coal had witness the only monthly increment among the major coal shipments.
Japanese non-coking coal imports had increased 7% M-o-M to 11.66 MnT in Jan’19.
Imports of Coking coal had decreased 4% M-o-M to 3.42 MnT in Jan’18, along with Anthracite coal shipments which were down 4% M-o-M.
There was a decline recorded for Pet coke shipment during Jan’19, which although being marked as the third-largest coal commodity after non-coking and coking coal, was down 2% M-o-M to 0.51 MnT.
However, Japan’s met coke shipment grew 11% on the month to 0.1 MnT in Jan’19.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Australian coal export to Japan increased 3% on the month to 10.25 MnT in Jan’19, which was also 2% higher on the year from 10.03 MnT in Jan’18.
Indonesian coal supplies dropped 20% M-o-M to 2.21 MnT in Jan’19, which was also 28% lower on the year from 3.08 MnT in Jan’18.
Russia replaced US to become the third-largest coal exporter in Jan’19.
Russian coal export grew 47% on the month to 1.54 MnT, while US coal exports to Japan fell 10% M-o-M to 1.46 MnT in Jan’19.
Canada, China, Colombia, Mexico and South Korea were the other noticeable coal suppliers to Japan in Jan’19.
