According to the data provided by Japanese customs, country’s coal import in Nov’17 has registered a growth of 2% M-o-M, but was slightly lower on the year than the imports in Nov’16.
Japanese coal import was 16.85 MnT in Nov’17 against 16.46 MnT in Oct’16. On the yearly basis, Coal imports had slipped 1% compared with 17.09 MnT in Nov’16.
Total coal imported from Japan in CY17 (till Nov) remained almost constant compared with the quantity recorded during the same period last year. As per the data, Japan has imported 180.07 MnT coal during Jan’17-Nov’17 period, which was merely 0.13% down against 180.31 MnT coal in Jan’16-Nov’16.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Imports of all the major coal grades had increased during the month except Anthracite, whose shipments had fallen 39% M-o-M to 0.39 MnT in Nov’17.
Non-coking coal imports had increased 2% M-o-M to 11.41 MnT, while Coking coal imports increase 4% on the month to 3.43 MnT in Nov’17.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Australia remained the top coal exporter to Japan followed by Indonesia, Russia, US and Canada.
Australian coal exports stood 9.55 MnT in Nov’17, which was slightly higher on the month compared with 9.48 MnT in Oct’17. On the yearly basis, Exports were down 11% compared with 10.73 MnT in Nov’16.
Indonesian coal export to Japan increased 11% M-o-M to 2.74 MnT in Nov’17, but was 3% lower on the year compared with 2.83 MnT in Nov’16.
Russia, the third-largest coal exporter, had witnessed fall in coal shipments to Japan both on the monthly as well as on the yearly basis. The country had supplied 1.62 MnT coal in Nov’17.
