CEC turned down requests from leaseholders in Karnataka to allow exports of Iron Pellet
On 21 May (Tuesday), a meeting was held in Karnataka with presence of Central Empowered Committee (CEC) –
P V Jayakrishan headed the team, director of mines and geology department, government of Karnataka, officials from the state forest department and more than 40 miners with leases to Category A and B and other officials.
CEC, appointed by Supreme Court, said that it does not support exporting of Iron Pellet from Karnataka as of now, which was suspended by Supreme Court in 2011.
CEC also discussed on various issues such as rehabilitation, mining and dumping ore in overlapping areas between mines, renewal of leases and allotment of category C mines were discussed.
Miners are to follow the important survey map fixed by the joint survey team of CEC in 2013 and CEC mentioned that on minor overlapping with C category mines, the area would not be allowed to mine further.In 2011, the Supreme Court banned Iron ore exports from Karnataka.
A total of 11 mines i.e. 9 A category mines and a couple of B category mines have started mining operations in Karnataka and would be able to contribute 4.5 MnT on an annual basis.
About 20 MnT of iron ore was exported on an annual basis from Karnataka, before ban imposed on July 26, 2010 by B S Yeddyurappa-headed government.
