Iron ore exports to Japan may continue despite higher duty – NMDC Chairman

Sumit Deb, Chairman of NMDC, has said that iron ore exports to Japan could continue despite the Centre withdrawing the decades-old duty waiver, according to an interview published in Financial Express recently. “The government will not be providing export duty relief it was providing earlier. But there is no bar on us to export iron ore. The only thing is that we have to pay 30% export duty like others and not 10% as earlier. We are indeed looking for exports,” Deb was quoted as saying. The mining major could begin with exports to Japan first rather than South Korea’s Posco. NMDC is targeting around 2.5 mn t of export sales in FY’22.
