Iron ore exports from India will virtually halt in coming time- Experts

Exports of iron ore, largest exporter in the world, will come to a halt in coming years said industry experts. With Shah commission's probe in illegal mining, which has already crippled supply of iron ore in Goa and Karnataka, for domestic and exports; will also impact Odisha mining industry.

“Orissa is not giving permits to iron-ore mining companies other than for captive mining,” Basant Poddar, Vice-President of Federation of Indian Mineral Industries, the premier mining industry body, said. “India's iron-ore production will virtually collapse,” he added.

Exports might not even touch 25 million this year, in case government plans to restrict or ban iron ore exports from Odisha, said another official from FIMI.

“Although Indian government wants value addition to be done in India rather than exporting it.But it will take time and with inconsistent policies not many companies are willing to risk their investments.” he further added.
