Iran: MSC on the Verge of Becoming Largest Steel Mill in MENA

Mobarakeh Steel Company (MSC), Iran’s largest steel company has produced 5.28 MnT crude steel during the 8 months of current Persian year (21 Mar-21 Nov’18). Crude steel production registered a growth of 12% Y-o-Y against around 4.60 MnT produced by MSC during the same period of last Persian year.

MSC has a remarkable share of 50% in Iran’s steel production. The company is the number one steel producer in Iran and the Middle East & North Africa region.

According to Mr. Bahman Ayyarrezaei , board member of MSC, “The company is targeting to increase its production to 25 MnT by the fiscal 2025-26 by establishing new steelmaking plants near Iran’s southern coasts. Europe, Southeast Asia, Middle East and North Africa are MSC’s main export destinations”.

It is to be noted that MSC is world’s biggest producer of direct-reduced iron. As per latest data released by IMIDRO, The production of direct-reduced iron stood at 16.51 MnT during the eight months under review, up 25% Y-o-Y. MSC had the largest share of 4.89 MnT.

According to the IMIDRO, Iran produced 13.06 MnT of slab, bloom, billet and ingots during the first eight months of the current Persian year (March 21-Nov. 21), marking a rise of 11% Y-o-Y. MSC along with its subsidiaries Saba and Hormozgan Steel, were the biggest producer with 6.31 MnT.

MSC was the second top producer of pellet in the country. Pellet output hit 27.47 MnT, up 32% Y-o-Y. Golgohar was the largest producer with 7.99 MnT, followed by MSC Steel Company with 5.11 MnT.
