Iran: Finished steel exports up 38% in Mar-Oct’21, despite output loss

According to recent data released by the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA), finished steel exports in the first seven months of the current Persian Year (Mar-Oct’21) stood at 1.86 million tonnes (mn t), registering a significant rise of 38% as compared to the same period last year.

This increase was registered despite the loss in production across semi-finished, sponge and finished steel in this period.

  • Exports of long and flat products in this period were recorded at 1.49 mn t and 0.37 mn t, up by 44% and 18%, respectively.
  • The export volumes of billets and blooms in the first seven months stood at 2.72 mn t, up by 11% as against the corresponding period last year (CPLY).
  • Slab export volumes were at 1.33 mn t in Mar-Oct’21, 80% higher than in CPLY.
  • DRI exports jumped 279% y-o-y to 0.69 mn t in Mar-Oct’21.

Restrictions on electricity consumption and widespread blackouts which prevailed in the second quarter affected the growth rate of steel exports. However, with easing in power supplies, export allocations by mills improved.

Despite the ups and downs in the last few months, the Iranian steel industry managed to export higher volumes in the first seven months of the current Persian Year compared to last year.
