Iran, one of the largest crude steel producer in MENA has produced 20 MnT crude steel in the 10 months of CY’18 as per the data released by World Steel Organization. The nation aims to increase crude steel production to 55 MnT in 2025. On parallel lines, Iran is also set to increase coal production in coming years.
According to Ardeshir Sa’ad Mohammadi, The deputy head of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) announced plans to increase coal production capacity in the country. He said, “Project is in line with a master plan for steel production, which seeks to achieve a capacity of 6 MnT for blast furnace which requires 3.7 MnT of coke and this in turn calls for producing 5 MnT of coal concentrate.”
Mr. Mohammadi added, “At present, a project to raise coal production capacity to 2.7 MnT is in progress, of which 750,000 MT is being implemented in Khomrud and three projects in Tabas. Out of these three projects, two projects are being run by the private sector with a capacity of 400,000 and 750,000 MT respectively, while another project with an 800,000 MT capacity will be carried out by IMIDRO and finance backed by China.”
Once the new projects go on stream, 1.35 MnT of coal concentrate will be produced and this will help to reduce supply problems. In the blast furnace method, 0.60 MT of coke is required for producing 1 MT of steel adding that 1.4 MT of coal is used to produce 1 MT of coke.
