Indonesia’s Listrik Negara Plans to Build 4 Coal-blending Terminals

Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, plans to build four coal-blending terminals, which will allow the company to diversify its coal supply, Harlen, Listrik Negara’s head of coal division said recently.

The company is looking at to built the terminals in South Sumatra, West Java, East Java and East Kalimantan. Each terminal will have capacity between 10-15 MnT per year, Harlen said.

“We want to be able to process a wide variety of coal,” he said. The company will conduct study on the locations to determine investment needed to build the facilities.

Listrik Negara typically use low to medium rank coal. The blending facilities will help the company sourcing more coal with various quality from all the country’s producing-regions to meet its growing demand. The government has a program to install 35 GW new generating capacity with the bulk coming from coal-fired power plants.

Indonesia’s coal consumption for electricity generating is expected to reach 92 MnT this year, rising from 82.2 MnT.

In addition to coal-blending terminals, the company plans to build coal processing plants as it aims to reduce transportation costs and to improve the quality of the power-station fuel. The plants can also serve as emergency storage to anticipate delayed shipments due to adverse weather, the company said in its website.
