- PTBA’s coal production in 2024 stands at 43 mnt
- Miner sets coal sales target of 50.1 mnt for 2024
Mysteel Global: PT Bukit Asam (PTBA), the largest coal mining group in Indonesia, aims to produce 50 million tonnes (mnt) of coal this year, according to a news report issued on its website on 4 February. The 2025 goal follows PTBA’s record-breaking output of 43.3 mnt in 2024, which surpassed the company’s target of 42 mnt for that year.
This year’s production target had earlier been revealed by PTBA president director Arsal Ismail last September on the sidelines of Coaltrans Asia in Bali, where he also announced the company would expand production to 60 mnt in 2026.
Parallelly, PTBA is targeting coal sales of 50.1 mnt this year, the report said, which, if achieved, would be a new record following the 16% increase in sales last year to over 42.9 mnt. The company’s sales have steadily grown over the past several years, from 26.1 mnt in 2020 to 37 mnt in 2023, PTBA observed.
The strong sales performance was largely driven by a 30% surge in exports, which reached 20.3 mnt last year. Additionally, domestic sales rose by 6%, accounting for 22.6 mnt of the total.
Notable export achievements include a 32% increase in shipments to India last year to 6.4 mnt. PTBA also saw a significant boost in exports to Vietnam, which rose by 250% to 3 mnt, while shipments to Thailand and Malaysia grew 153% to 1.6 mnt and 221% to 888,700 tonnes (t), respectively.
In 2024, Indonesia’s coal production touched 836 mnt, surpassing the previous record of 775 mnt set in 2023, according to Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.
