The Indonesian government has allowed three coal companies to sell their coal abroad after they complied with their domestic market obligation, wherein coal companies are obliged to sell 25% of their produce to state power utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN). The coal export ban was announced in early Aug’21 after PLN faced a severe supply crunch as miners prioritized coal exports especially to China amid their increased demand and good realisations. The three companies that have been allowed to re-export are Borneo Indobara, Bara Tabang and Arutmin, while coal export from other 31 companies remain in suspension.
