Indonesia Billet Trade: Imports Witness Nearly 6% M-o-M Drop

Indonesia billet imports stood at 353,798 MT during Feb’20, to register an M-o-M drop of 5.9%. The same were recorded at 376,169 MT during Jan’20. The drop in imports was primarily due to a new mill PT Dexin steel which started selling billets from mid Jan’20. The first phase company’s focus is on billets and wire manufacturing.

Meanwhile, the country’s billet imports witnessed 87% Y-o-Y growth during Feb’20 from 189,127 MT in Feb’19.

However, unlike other major countries of SE Asia, Indonesia didn’t opt for the lockdown. In recent reports, the Indonesian Chief Security Minister said, “lockdown was still not an option to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia, saying that the Indonesian Military and the National Police would start to get involved in enforcing physical distancing in public.” The minister added a lockdown would endanger the livelihood of people working in some sectors, especially daily workers.
