India’s steel capacity expansion approvals rose to 50.34 million tonnes (mnt) in FY26, more than doubling from 23.08 mnt in FY25, marking a clear shift toward large-scale capacity creation. Approvals remain concentrated in eastern and central India, particularly in Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, which together account for the majority of capacity additions. Proximity to iron ore reserves and established industrial ecosystems continues to anchor expansion in these regions.
