India’s sponge iron sector records 3.41 mn t of thermal coal imports in Q1 FY’22

India’s thermal coal imports by the sponge iron sector during the Apr-Jun’21 period stood at 3.41 mn t, with 2.12 mn t imported by traders and 1.29 mn t of direct imports by end-users. The highest volume of imports of 2.87 mn t was recorded from South Africa and the highest grade imported was equivalent to domestic coal having CV of 5500-5800 NAR. Sponge iron producers imported Indonesian coal, with imports touching 0.31 mn t of 4600-4900 NAR grade topping the chart.
