India’s total consumption of petroleum products during Apr-Nov’21 stood at 129.98 mnt against 122.99 mnt in same period last year, thus recording a y-o-y rise of 6%. In the latest figures available for Nov’21 the consumption stood at 17.1 mnt, down 4% m-o-m and 11% y-o-y.

Notably, HSD (high speed diesel), MS (motor spirit), LPG (liquified petroleum gas), naphtha and petcoke contribute to 80% of total petroleum products consumption.

HSD is used mainly as transportation fuel in rail or road transportation. MS is mostly used in private vehicles and two-wheelers while LPG is majorly used for cooking and in specific industrial applications. Petroleum coke is used in the cement sector whereas naphtha is mostly used in the fertilizer industry and power plants. There is a significant decline of 22% in pet coke’s consumption this year amid its surged prices in line with risen coal costs.
