India’s total consumption of petroleum products during Apr-Dec’21 stood at 148.3 million tonnes (mnt) against 141.4 mnt in the same period last year, thus recording a y-o-y rise of 5%.

Product-wise consumption (in mnt):

Notably, HSD (high speed diesel), MS (motor spirit), LPG (liquified petroleum gas), naphtha and petcoke contribute to 80% of total petroleum products consumption.

High speed diesel is used mainly as a transportation fuel in rail or road transportation. Motor spirit, on the other hand, is used in private vehicles and two-wheelers, while LPG is majorly used for cooking and in specific industrial applications.

The percentage share of pet coke recorded a drop of 21% during Apr-Dec’21 amid its continuous price increase in both international and domestic markets, which thereby compelled several cement manufacturers to switch to thermal coal.
