India's non-coking coal imports rise nearly 8% y-o-y in H1FY'25. Will trend continue in H2?

India’s Country-Wise Non-Coking Coal Imports in H1 FY’25 (Apr-Sep)

India’s imports of non-coking coal, used both for thermal power generation and in the industrial sectors, reached around 93 million tonnes (mnt) in April-September 2024 (H1FY’25) compared with 86.5 mnt in H1FY’24, as per latest data available with BigMint. This reflects an increase of 8% y-o-y in imports of non-coking coal, which exposes India’s high dependence on coal imports despite efforts aimed at import substitution spearheaded by the government.
