India’s coal production up 12% y-o-y in Nov’22

India’s coal production in November, 2022 stood at 75.87 million tonnes (mnt), a rise of almost 12% y-o-y. Meanwhile, m-o-m growth was around 15%.

It may be noted here that the yearly growth indicates the country’s preparedness to meet its growing energy needs as 70% of it comes from coal. On the other hand, monthly growth indicates efficient utilisation of the dry season for coal production so as to build inventory.

Coal India, the country’s biggest coal producer, has met its monthly target this month. Coal production by the miner stood at 60.7 mnt in November 2022, which was 13% up y-o-y.

A comparative analysis of CIL subsidiaries shows that, barring NCL, all grew in double digits in November 2022 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, growth in Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) were impressive, at 27% and 24% y-o-y, respectively.

Singareni Collieries Company Limited’s (SCCL’s) production was at 6.05 mnt in November 2022, an increase of 8% y-o-y. Moreover, a 16% m-o-m increase indicates that the miner has recovered from the disruptions caused by heavy rains in October.

Coal production from captive miners stood at 9.12 mnt in November, a rise of 8% y-o-y.

India’s coal production in Apr-Nov’22 up 17%

India produced 524 mnt of coal over April-November, 2022, an increase of 17% y-o-y. This increase was made possible by the 17% and 33% y-o-y growth by CIL and captive miners during April-November, 2022, respectively. CIL’s production rose to 524 mnt from 448 mnt seen during the same period of the previous year. In a similar vein, production from captive miners increased to 71 mnt in April-November, 2022 against 53 mnt in the same period last year.

SCCL’s production, however, remained range-bound y-o-y at 40.5 mnt in this period.
