India’s coal production rises by 10 mnt y-o-y in Jan’23

India’s coal production increased by 10 million tonnes (mnt) or 13% y-o-y to 90 mnt. Meanwhile, m-o-m growth was around 7%.

This quantum jump in coal production is a positive indication. If this rate continues, India would have sufficient coal inventory for summer when power demand increases.

Company-wise performance

India’s largest coal producer, Coal India Ltd. (CIL), saw a growth of 11% y-o-y. It has taken its production to almost 72 mnt in January 2023. Meanwhile, production increased by 8% m-o-m.

  • In an unprecedented event, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL), went on to become the highest coal producing subsidiary of CIL in January, 2023. The subsidiary coal production stood at 19.44 mnt, a rise of 31% y-o-y.
  • Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd’s (MCL’s) coal production stood at 19 mnt in the said period, marginally short from SECL. Meanwhile, MCL saw a growth of 10% y-o-y.
  • Western Coalfields Ltd’s (WCL’s) coal production increased by 25% y-o-y to nearly 8 mnt in January, 2023.
  • Eastern Coalfields Ltd and Northern Coalfields Ltd saw a negative growth of around 5% y-o-y in the said period.

On the other hand, Singareni Collieries Company Limited’s (SCCL’s) production stood at 6.9 mnt in January, 2023, an increase of 14% y-o-y.  The monthly increase, however, was only 2%.

Furthermore, coal production from captive miners increased by 23% y-o-y and 15% m-o-m during the same period.

India’s coal production rises by 16% in FY23

In FY23 (April 2022-January 2023), India’s coal production increased by 16% y-o-y to 693 mnt. Out of which, CIL’s production was 551 mnt with 15% y-o-y growth.

MCL’s production increased by nearly 22 mnt during April 2022-January 2023 as compared to the same period last year.  Among CIL’s subsidiaries, the highest growth rate of 26% was achieved by Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL).

Meanwhile, the highest growth rate of 31% y-o-y in the said period was achieved by captive miners. Captive miners’ production stood at 93 mnt in January, 2023.

However, SCCL’s production inched up by 3% to 54 mnt during the period.
