India’s monthly coal imports have risen by 3% in May’16 in the wake of persisting additional demand for monsoon. Also, recorded decline of 2.5% Y-o-Y.
India, the third largest dry fuel importers across the globe, had imported around 21 MnT coal (including Pet coke) in May’16. However, monthly imports have risen by 3% compared to last month.
As per SteelMint’s data analysis, the country imported total 15.2 MnT non-coking coal (up by 2%), 4.2 MnT coking coal (up by 6%) and around 0.4 MnT coke & anthracite in May’16.
Besides, Indian utilities have also imported 1.3 MnT Pet coke, highest ever since 2013; which was majorly supplied by USA and Saudi Arabia.

Quantity in MnT
While, the consecutive rise in India’s coal imports since couple of months was result of rising demand of coal before monsoon. It has been noted that, every year, India imports more quantity during the May in order to fulfil additional demand of the country for restocking prior monsoon.

Perhaps, the increased domestic supply to plants should drive coal imports to go down. But, as the domestic material is of low grade, it seems to be less favouring for import reduction and imports are increasing on higher pace.
Major exporting countries to India in May’16
Indonesia, the biggest conventional source of the country, supplied about 8.8 MnT of coal, registered a down fall of 3% against Apr’16.
Meanwhile, India purchases most of its coal from major supplier countries such as Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, USA, Colombia and Saudi Arabia. These nations had supplied about 8.8 MnT, 4.5 MnT, 3.8 MnT, 1.6 MnT, 0.6 MnT and 0.4 MnT respectively to India.
Major discharging ports and importers in May’16
Mundra, India’s biggest ports in dry fuel handling, received the highest volume of 2.6 MnT with a rise of 6% in May’16. Other ports of the country, Kandla, Krishnapatnam, Paradip and Gangavaram received 2 MnT, 1.8 MnT, 1.6 MnT and 1.5 MnT of coal during the month.

Quantity in MnT
Companies like Adani Enterprises, Adani Power, JSW Steel, CGPL, Tata Steel, Essar Steel, SAIL and Agarwal Coal imported large quantities of about 2.4 MnT, 1.8 MnT, 1.1 MnT, 0.8 MnT, 0.7 MnT, 0.7 MnT, 0.7 MnT and 0.6 MnT respectively in May’16.
