India’s monthly coal imports fell by 5.6% to 17 MnT in Nov’15 amid oversupplied coal market and poor industrial demand.
India, world’s third largest coal importer, has witnessed a fall in Nov’15 coal imports. The country’s import registered a marginal fall of 5.6% during the month after recorded 20% hike in Oct’15. The country has imported about 17 MnT at the end of the month, which is 22.7% lower than import of Nov’14.
Rise in domestic supply by CIL coupled with sluggish demand owing to poor industrial movement, in addition constant devaluation in INR which plunged to its lowest in Dec’15 since 2013, is influencing Indian buyers to reduce their imports.
Meanwhile on one hand where increased domestic supply is proving sufficient for the industry majors as they are being less dependent on imports on the other lower grade issues in domestic coal is still reflecting necessity of imported material.
As per SteelMint’s data analysis, out of the total coal import, the country imported around 12.4 MnT of non-coking coal, which fell about 5% against the 13.1 MnT imported in Oct’15; about 4.3 MnT coking coal, registering a fall of about 9% compared to last month, and about 0.24 MnT coke was imported by the country which risen by 11.6% compared to last month.
