Indian: Turmeric prices surge 80% amid tight supplies, drought concerns

  • Turmeric prices rise sharply as lower carry-forward stocks and limited arrivals tighten market availability.
  • Export demand and concerns over the next crop support bullish sentiment, although production growth estimates remain a key factor to watch.

India’s turmeric market is witnessing a sharp rally, with prices increasing around 80% year-on-year and more than 18% over the past month, according to recent market reports. Prices in several domestic markets have crossed INR 23,000 per quintal, while NCDEX futures have approached INR 24,500 per quintal. The rally reflects tightening supplies, firm demand and growing uncertainty over the next crop.

Lower stocks and weather concerns support prices

Carry-forward stocks are emerging as a major factor behind the price increase. Market estimates indicate that the closing stock could decline to around 15 lakh bags, compared with more than 20 lakh bags in the previous season. Reduced availability is encouraging farmers and stockists to hold inventories in anticipation of higher prices, limiting the volume of turmeric entering the market.

Weather conditions have added to supply concerns. A crop assessment in Karnataka reportedly identified damage across 13,446 hectares, valued at approximately INR 188.24 crore. Water shortages in parts of Maharashtra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu could also affect crop development and future arrivals. However, the government’s production outlook reportedly projects an increase of around 15% in turmeric output in 2026, highlighting the importance of actual yields and harvested volumes in determining the market’s direction.

Outlook

Export demand remains an important factor, although monthly shipments have shown mixed trends. India’s turmeric exports declined 10% year-on-year to 13,489 tonnes in July 2026. However, cumulative exports during April-July increased 4% to 65,476 tonnes, indicating that demand across the broader export period remains supportive.

For traders, processors and exporters, the immediate focus will be on daily arrivals, stock availability, rainfall conditions and fresh-crop development. Continued stock withholding and weather-related production losses could keep prices firm in the near term. Conversely, improved crop conditions, higher-than-expected production or increased selling at elevated prices could limit further gains.

Overall, the turmeric market remains supply-sensitive, with weather developments and actual crop estimates likely to determine whether the current rally can be sustained.
