Indian Steel Mills Continue to Book South African Lump Import Vessels

According to market sources report to SteelMint, west and southern India based steel mills have continued to book import vessels of South African lump.

A supplier of Assmang lumps shared with SteelMint that ” market for imported lump is stable. We would be loading three vessels of about 270,000 MT in May’18. We haven’t started June bookings yet. “

A Gujarat based steelmaker also reported booking of 2 vessels expected to arrive in May’18. The vessels have been booked on an monthly average Platts index basis and the lump premiuim.

The spot lump premium assessed at USD 0.1650/ dmtu, CFR China, on Thursday (26th Apr’18), up USD 0.0015/dmtu on D-o-D basis. There is reduced supply of lump owing to bad weather conditions near the port besides declining inventories, expecting enhancement in lump market.

Indian iron ore imports likely to Cross 1 MnT in April – SteelMint Data

According to customs data maintained with SteelMint, in April (till 26th) 0.91 MnT iron ore has already been imported by Indian mills and vessels have arrived at berth. Few vessels are at anchorage and expected positions which might increase the monthly import quantities to 1 MnT.

South Africa remained 2nd largest source for Indian iron ore imports in FY18

Indian iron ore import increased sharply by 49% to 8.6 MnT in FY’18 against 5.79 MnT in FY’17. South Africa accounted for 32% of total Indian iron ore import volumes at 2.78 MnT, up 19% on yearly basis. On monthly basis, Indian iron ore imports increased sharply by 36% in Mar’18 to 1.46 MnT.
