Indian Steel Mills Book South African Lump Import Vessels for Jun’18 Deliveries

According to market sources report to SteelMint, India based steel mills have continued to book import vessels of South African lump for June’18 deliveries.

A Gujarat based steelmaker reported two vessels booked through traders which are to arrive in June’18 at Gujarat ports. The vessels have been booked on monthly average Platts index basis.

The spot lump premium assessed at USD 0.1900/ dmtu, CFR China, on Friday (11th May’18), up USD 0.0005/dmtu on D-o-D basis.

A supplier reported “We have started booking for June with one shipment loading at Krishanapatnam port for 90,000 MT and are discussing for further shipments”.

Indian iron ore imports remained close to 1 MnT in May – SteelMint Data

As per customs data maintained with SteelMint, two vessels of South African lumps expected to arrive in May of SAL Steel and Welspun Steel with total quantity of 238,000 MT. Total quantity of iron ore imports to India is expected to be around 1 MnT in May’18.

South Africa remained 2nd largest source for Indian iron ore imports in Apr’18

Indian iron ore imports in Apr’18 recorded at 0.97 MnT, according to the customs data maintained by SteelMint. On yearly basis iron ore imports increased to more than three-fold against 0.28 MnT in Apr’17. Indian iron ore lump imports by west & south India based importers have remained stable in last few months and they have booked decent quantities for May deliveries as well.

South Africa contributed 31% of total Indian iron ore imports in Apr’18 with volume at 0.30 MnT , down 9% on monthly basis. Indian iron ore imports in Apr’18 decreased by 34% to 0.97 MnT, as against 1.46 MnT in Mar’18.

In FY’18, South Africa accounted for 32% of total Indian iron ore import volumes at 2.78 MnT, up 19% on yearly basis.
