Coking Coal : Coking Coal prices are going up once again, after taking a U-turn, from the falling trend exhibited upto the end of Oct’17.
Demand for the coal has strengthened substantially as buyers in the major steel producing nations have become aggressive in importing the coal well in advance before the winter holidays to begin in Australia towards the later part of Dec’17 and the rainy season setting in that country by Dec’17 end.
There will be no production of the coal—hence, no supply—during the winter holidays, extending from 20Dec’17 to 8Jan’18, when the coal companies will be closed. Thereafter, the rainy season is likely to impact the supply of coal by flooding coal mines and railway lines, apart from raising the moisture content in the coal. Typically, Indian buyers do not prefer more than 10-12% moisture content in the coal.
At the same time, maintenance activities going on at various coal handling terminals in Australia are causing delays for coal cargo vessels at the ports. According to the latest vessel line-up reports, there are 44 coal vessels waiting in queue at DBCT, in which, maintenance activity is going on in the berth no 2, and that is expected to stretch at least upto 5 Dec’17. Moreover, the Port Kembla Coal Terminal is now closed for two weeks as a new ship loader is being installed.
