Indian steel manufacturers prefer to wait and watch till Shah commission submit its final report on illegal mining in Odisha. Commission has been appointed by central government to check illegal mining in states like Karnataka, Goa and Odisha.
Supreme court had put a blanket ban on iron ore mining in Karnataka and Goa after Shah commission's recommendation in the Year 2011 and 2012. Steel manufacturers fear that any negative report by commission on Odisha may put blanket ban in the state as well.
“We are not very comfortable buying iron ore from Odisha, as Shah commission is yet to submit its final report. Any negative suggestion will put a mining industry in severe crisis, as we saw in Karnataka and Goa.” said a sponge manufacturer based in Bengal.
