With increasing Sponge iron production and static Coal production from Coal India, has forced Sponge makers to go for imported South African Coal. In a recent data collected by SteelMint from 32 ports across the country, it was noticed that Coal imports from S. Africa has jumped significantly in last few months.

On similar lines, Sponge manufacturers based in southern region mentioned that due to accessibility to port and non- availability of domestic Coal, we are very much dependent on S. African Coal. Recently, Coal from Mozambique has also attracted Sponge makers’ attention.
