Indian Ship Breaking Demand Increases as Steel Prices Rebound

Number of ships coming for demolition into India are expected to increase in January compared to December. Trade sources in Alang reported that demand for demolition ships is picking up and it is expected to breach at 22-25 ships in Jan’16.

India’s offers for ship breaking cargo are mostly compared to global ship breaking offers, especially Bangladesh and Pakistan offers.

Semi finish prices in Indian market rebound by INR 2,000-3,000/MT in Dec’15 and expected to remain robust in short-term due to anticipated imposition of Minimum import Price (MIP), mentioned most of the market participants.

Alang ship breaking HMS price in Dec’15 increased by INR 600-1,000/MT. Whereas, re-rolling scrap offers surged by INR 1,500-2,000/MT in the same period.

Alang is the largest ship recycling yard in Asia, which handled about 196 ships in 2015, 286 ships in 2014, 305 ships in 2013. Alang is also a major source for scrap generation in India.
