Indian Pig Iron Exports Fall by 24% in H1 2015

Pig iron export from India witnesses a sharp fall of 24% Y-o-Y in the first half of the year.

SteelMint assessed, India exported around 329,500 MT Pig iron during Jan-June’15 compared to 435,700 MT in Jan-June’14.

Dull demand and drastic fall in price of Pig iron in global market resisted export from India. It may be noted that prices of Pig iron have fallen by USD 120-130/MT Y-o-Y, which is fall of around 32%.

Adding to the global trouble, massive supply of Chinese steel products like billet, plate and longs to every corner of the world at a cheaper rate has blocked Pig iron and scrap trade of rest of the countries. This has built huge price pressure, making trades further woeful.

MMTC remains the largest exporter with 168,500 MT followed by Sesa Sterlite with 118,000 MT and RINL with 43,000 MT for first six months of calendar year 2015.

Thailand accounted for more than 50% of Indian export, followed by South Korea which accounted for 20%.
