Indian Coal Imports

Indian Non-Coking Coal Imports Down 6% M-o-M in Jul’18

According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, Indian non-coking coal imports have decreased 6% on the month to 14.15 MnT in Jul’18 compared with 15.01 MnT in Jun’18.

Imports were down for the second-successive month, as Indian coal buying was constrained by coal already stocked for the monsoon period while a fall in power demand had also lowered the country’s coal sourcing from its major coal exporter-Indonesia, in Jul’18. On the other hand, import from South Africa, US and Australia had witnessed growth on the monthly basis.

On the yearly basis, imports had increased 3% from 13.77 MnT in Jul’17.

Domestic logistical bottlenecks due to a shortage of rakes, and surging power demand have fuelled higher non-coking imports, which are expected to stay firm through the rest of the year.

During the first 7 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Jul’18), Indian non-coking coal imports have reached 98.29 MnT, up 18% from the 83 MnT coal imported over the same period in 2017.

Major Coal Exporters:
Indonesia accounted for over half of the total supplies, however export from the country had fallen to a 5-month low in Jul’18. Indonesian coal exports were marked 7.27 MnT in Jul’18, down 21% M-o-M from 9.16 MnT in Jun’18, which was also 18% lower on the year compared with 8.82 MnT in Jul’17.

South African coal export to India had increased 14% over the month to 3.42 MnT in Jul’18, which was almost firm on the year-on-year basis from 3.44 MnT in Jul’17.

US was the third-largest coal exporter in Jul’18. The country had recorded a growth of 54% in monthly exports to 1.45 MnT, which was 204% higher on the year from 0.48 MnT in Jul’17.
